Five Reasons to Start a Detox Program

There are many reasons to start a detox program in order to improve your health. Here are five of the main ones.

1. Getting Rid of Toxins from the Body

We are constantly exposed to toxins throughout our busy day. We usually start first thing in the morning with the personal care products we use. Studies have shown that on average, men are exposed to 60 different harmful chemicals in their personal care products, and women around 100. These toxins can affect the liver, kidneys, and of course the skin, which eliminates toxins from our body through perspiration.

The skin then gets bombarded with toxins throughout the day – especially if you live in a large city with a lot of pollution. A detox program that includes switching to homemade toiletries made with all-natural ingredients could be one part of a detox program. So could showering and washing your hair at the end of each day so irritants don’t transfer onto your sheets and pillowcases. Changing your bedding often can also help.

In terms of what we eat, tuna might seem a great diet food, but in many cases, it is loaded with the heavy metal mercury. Muscle Milk might seem a great way to get protein, especially after a workout, but studies have shown it is dangerously high in the heavy metal arsenic. Both mercury and arsenic build up in the body and are very difficult to get rid of. A good detox program can help flush many toxins out of your system.

2. Better Digestion

Our digestion is affected by the things we eat, such as junk food and foods loaded with artificial coloring, flavoring, and preservatives. It can also be affected by stress. A good cleanse and detox program can help clean things out, especially if you suffer from constipation frequently. Eating healthy foods that don’t inflame your gut can also help. Some people eat a raw diet as a detox, while others enjoy a juice fast.

3. Greater Energy

A lot of people decide to detox because they are feeling tired and sluggish all the time. Some even report that they feel as though they are living in a mental fog and really struggling at work and home. Removing toxins from the body and eliminating potentially harmful foods can do wonders for energy levels. A juice fast and/or your own homemade recipes can perk you up again in a remarkably short period of time. Opt for “clean eating” – that is, using only whole foods you have made from scratch, like fruit, vegetables, and wild-caught salmon.

4. Better Brain Power

A diet rich in whole foods and what are termed superfoods can give you all the nutrients you need naturally, without taking vitamins or supplements. Superfoods are so-called not just because they are packed full of vitamins and minerals, but also because they are believed to have disease-fighting properties. Good examples include broccoli, kale, and spinach.

The minerals in fruits and vegetables (such as zinc and magnesium) can help boost brain power because they speed up the electrical impulses between the synapses of the brain, leading to faster recall and sharper focus. If you’ve ever heard that fish is “brain food,” this is the main reason why, so start adding more to your diet each week.

5. Weight Loss

If you’ve been struggling with your weight, detox can help promote healthy weight loss in a number of ways. Firstly, if you do a lemon water or juice fast detox, you will be flushing out toxins and eating fewer calories. The liquid can help you feel full. Over time, eating in this way will start to curb cravings for sweet foods and junk foods. If you have a sweet tooth, try a raw diet for a couple of days and see how little you crave cake, cookies and other empty carbs.

These are just five of the many reasons to start a detox program.
